Lake Maracaibo Oill Spill Images
This folder contains MODIS 250-m data products to show the oil spill
events in Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela (details can be found in a
manuscript
submitted to EOS.
As of 8 May 2003, these data products are being automatically generated. New data will appear on a regular basis.
There are three types of files, namely:
- Image Products
- RGB composite
- These images can be used to examine the cloud cover.

Notable images:
- Black-white images of the 250-m bands (band0: 620-670 nm; band1: 841-876 nm)
- These images were automatically streched to show better contrast, therefore some features
may not be well revealed because the same strech scheme was applied to all images with
different dynamic signal ranges. For example, the rgb image may show no cloud cover but
the black-white image shows nothing. Under these circumstances, you need to use the raw
data stored in HDF files and strech them manually. Some spill slicks are clearly visible
on the black-white images (e.g., 2003016, 2003018, 2003020) while others may show the
slicks on the rgb images (typically on rgb images with apparent sun glint, e.g., 2003059,
2003066). Identified dates with possible oil spills are (some of these should be manually
stretched to see the contrast): 2002360, 2003004, 2003016, 2003018, 2003020, 2003025,
2003027, 2003034, 2003036, 2003048, 2003055, 2003057,2003059, 2003064, 2003066, 2003068.

- This data product contains multiple bands from L1B and higher MODIS products at 250m spatial
resolution. Bands originally at lower resolution were nilinearly interpolated to match the 250m
bands. The bands included are:
